Methyldopa is an antihypertensive drug. It is metabolized to alpha-methyinorepinephtine, which lowers arterial pressure by stimulation of central inhibitory alpha-adrenergic receptors, false neurotransmission, and/or reduction of plasma rennin activity.
The usual starting dosage dose is 250mg 2 or 3 times daily for the first 48 hours. The dosage is then adjusted up or down to achieve the optimum antihypertensive effect.
Used to lower both supine and standing blood pressure.
