Primaquine is in a class of medication called antimalarial. It acts by interfering with a part of the parasite (mitochondria) that is responsible for supplying it with energy. Without energy, the parasite dies.

It is recommended only for the radical cure of vivax and ovale malaria (the prevention of relapse in vivax and ovale malaria), or following the termination of chloroquine phosphate suppressive therapy in an area where vivax or ovale malaria is endemic
